Do you ever scroll through classroom photos and think I wish I could do that in my classroom? There are some beautiful classrooms out there, but I teach a special education class. My students can be destructive and can destroy things… not to mention they don’t do well with lots of visual distractions. That’s a lot to deal with! Here are 3 tips that work really well in my special education classroom.

Limit visual distractions!

My go to is a light weight curtain rod, command hooks and twist ties. Check it out:

I only use the twist ties if my rod is going to hang in a spot that gets a lot of traffic. I could only find white twist ties, so we just colored them with a black marker to help them camouflage them. If you have trouble finding black fabric try using a black bed sheet set. All together, my fabric, rods and hooks were less than $15.

Laminate the bulletin board paper!

We have all had that student that rips down our bulleting board in a rage. Save yourself time and energy by laminating the paper before you staple it up. Not only does it save you time reassembling the bulletin board, but the paper won’t fade. Since it won’t fade, you can use if year after year after year. Win!

Embrace Mounting Putty!

Have you used mounting putty AKA ticky tack? It’s seriously awesome! It sticks to everything and can be reused over and over!! Do you have cinder block walls? It sticks to it! Do your students need to take visuals or materials off the wall for a closer look? The putty is perfect for that. Students can easily hang things back up with this stuff. I use it to hang everything on my walls and for my theme vocabulary cards picture below. We use and move the cards around when we write or talk about them. It doesn’t matter how often you move the cards, the putty always sticks.
