It can be really challenging to keep our students engaged during the summer months. Our students need the continuous programming, so we need to find hands on tasks that keep their attention while they are learning. Here are 3 different that I use with my students.
Summer BINGO Game
This game has question cards that come in 2 levels so all of my students are able to play with the same boards. Yay!
This Summer BINGO Game is perfect for teaching students to identify the label and function of summer vocabulary. If you have students who can read, you can also have students read the clues to each other. Having the students read the clues helps teach peers to attend to each other.
Tip: If you want to build in an opportunity to practice requesting, mount the boards on different colored construction paper. Students then have to request which board they would like.
Reading Comprehension Playdoh Mats
What kid doesn’t like to use playdoh?!?! My class LOVES playdoh! If you are using it to generalize skills, then you are missing out on a powerful reinforcing activity. Here is one of the way we use playdoh. We use these Read and Do Playdoh Mats that are summer themed.
Read and Do Playdoh mats are the perfect way for students to demonstrate their comprehension skills in a fun and engaging way. My students are so focused on playing with the playdoh that they don’t even realize that they are working on reading comprehension and generalization skills! Most of the playdoh mats have 2 levels and a matching mat is also included.
Summer Themed Work Tasks
These summer themed tasks combine fun graphics and hands on learning for a fun way to practice and maintain their skills.
These hands on work tasks provide a fun way for students to work on learning and maintaining their skills throughout the summer. We use the clip cards and sizing tasks in our work task boxes. The write the room and count the room tasks get the kiddos up and moving while they learn. FUN!!
Do you have a go to activity that keeps students engaged during summer? Please share it in the comments so we can all learn!
