4 Ways To Use Your Sensory Bin

Our students love to explore sensory bins, but they can be used for so much more than just a reinforcer. Here are 5 different ways you can integrate your sensory bin into your lessons and school day.

One

Interactive books combined with the sensory bin = GOLD!!! If you aren’t using them together in your classroom, you are missing out! My students love it when I hide the interactive book pieces in the sensory bin. Here, we are using one of the adapted books from our Fire Safety Interactive Books set.

We also used our math interactive book with the sensory bin. Students had to find the corrent amount of pieces to make the set. This book is from our Halloween Interactive book set.

Two

Make math more exciting by including your sensory bin or table. We work on number recognition, sequencing and making sets ALL. THE. TIME!! It can get really boring. Spice it up by adding your sensory bin into the task.

For example, hide numbers in your sensory bin like we did in the above picture. As students find the numbers, have them label the number and then put the numbers in order. Students are so much more interested in working on the same old skill again when they get to stick their hand in the sensory bin first. 

Three

Add the sensory bin into any lesson targeting matching. Here, students had to pull a picture from the sensoy bin after we read the book from our weather unit. Some students simply had to match the picture card to the correct page in the book. Other students had to label what was going on before matching. Super easy to differentiate with the same materials this way!

Four

Add the sensory bin into any sorting task to make it more exciting and engaging for students. Here we added it into a science review lesson on the five senses. You could do this as a work task where one student completes it alone or as a small group. This is one of out science sorting tasks. 
You can add it into social studies like we did while sorting pictures into our venn diagram. 
It is so easy to add a sensory component to your lessons! When you do, your students will be more focused and engaged. They will WANT to participate. Give it a try!!
