In my room EVERYONE wants to be the line leader! We have a job chart which assigns a daily line leader and caboose, but there were still disagreements about being second! To fix this, we added in a number chart that assigns every student to a spot in the line. We pick numbers daily during morning meeting. We take the chart with us to every special, recess, lunch, assemblies, etc. to ensure there are no more disagreements about who gets to be in the front of the line.
As a bonus, this chart has prompted some nice math talks. While we are setting up the chart, we talk about:
number identification
sequencing
ordingal positions
greater and less than
We laminated the chart with the names of the students on it. We also laminated white number squares. We move the number squares around each day once students have picke a number. A bigger number card (that the students pick from a bowl) stays on the students’ desk…. attached with Velcro.
Tip: leave a blank spot at the bottom of the chart in case you get a new student. If I get a new student, I just write in their name using a Sharpie marker.
Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for getting students to line up with out fighting over spots? Please share it with us in the comments!
