Designing an effective classroom set up is important because it can help increase attention to task, decrease behaviors and create a natural flow. Many times, our students are highly distractable. There are things we can do to the classroom environment to make it EASIER for them to attend, self-regulate and learn.

There are things we can do to the classroom environment to make it EASIER for them to attend, self-regulate and learn.
Begin by taking inventory of the furniture that you have available that can naturally be used as boundaries to create individual and group work spaces. When choosing which furniture you are going to use as boundaries, think about these things:

* The furniture needs to be sturdy. You don’t want students to be able to tip it over by accident or while engaging in behaviors. 
*Line of sight… will students still be able to be monitored and seen if you use this item for a boundary?
*Does it make sense to have this furniture in this space. For example, if you use the student bookshelves as a boundary, it doesn’t make sense to make that the boundary for the math center. 

Visual Distractions

If you like cutesy classrooms or heavy decor, you may not like what I have to say! Busy fabrics, see through containers, clutter and lots of color creates visual distractions for students. That means it distracts them when they should be learning. 
Busy visual fields can also make it hard for students to find what they need and be independent within the classroom. There are also students who begin to feel overwhelmed or agitated in busy or cluttered areas.

Create Work Spaces

Now that you have picked the furniture you are going to use for boundaries, arrange them in ways that naturally create small work spaces.

Students can be working at different tables or areas without being able to see what peers are doing at a different table or area. The furniture also absorbs some of the sounds which is helpful.
